Aerospace Ground Equipment (AGE)

The museum exhibits several types of AGE used by the United States Air Force (and many other organizations) over the years:

MA-1A Gas Turbine Compressor

This self-contained compressor is capable of supplying low-pressure air at high volume for ground support of aircraft. It is powered by a gas turbine engine that rotates at 42,000 rpm and delivers compressed air at 30 psi. The unit could be used to start USAF aircraft that had air-driven starter systems, such as the McDonnell F-101 Voodoo. It originally cost $16,000 and was manufactured by Airesearch Manufacturing Company of Denver.

MD-3 Ground Power Units

These portable devices were used to generate electrical power for ground operation and starting of certain USAF aircraft, including the Boeing B-47 Stratojet and Lockheed T-33 T-Bird. They used gasoline-powered, six-cylinder Continental reciprocating engines to drive their electrical generators.

This generator set provided 28 volt, 1000 amp direct current for aircraft ground support. It was manufactured by the Consolidated Diesel Electric Company. MD-3B Ground Power Unit (left)
